Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 3G, an updated version of the iPhone that will run on the high-speed 3G wireless network. The device will be released on July 11 and will cost $199 for an 8GB model and $299 for 16GB.
The iPhone 3G will have a black case with a white case optional on one model. The devices will initially be available in 22 countries, with a total of 70 countries planned.
New features include built-in GPS functionality, better battery life, full support for Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office applications.
Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs showed off the new phone Monday at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco.
Apple also announced a wide range of new programs and applications for the iPhone including:
eBay. It provides easy access to search, summary of activities, and a personal avatar. You can see a photo of an auction item and all the information. The application will show you when you've been outbid, so you can easily see what you're winning and losing. Entering a bid is really easy.
Super Monkey Ball video game by Sega. It features 110 stages and all four of the classic monkeys. Available at the launch of the iPhone App Store for $9.99.
TypePad is a text and photo blogging application. Available for free at the launch of the App Store.
The Mobile News Network is a free news gathering application from the Associated Press. It's smart enough to figure out where you're using the iPhone and show the correct local news. Users can also use the application to submit a photograph or firsthand account of a breaking news story.
The new iPhone will have increased battery life, with 300 hours of standby time and 10 hours of talk time on the 2G network (5 hours of talk time on the 3G network). Web-browsing time is 5-6 hours, with 7 hours of video time and 24 hours of audio time.
The device is also thinner than the previous iPhone, and will feature a 'flush' headphone jack allowing for a greater variety of accessories to be used.
